Balding, Thinning Hair or a Receding Hairline?

Hair loss in men often starts with subtle changes – a receding hairline, thinning at the crown, or overall loss of density. Over time, these changes can become more noticeable and harder to reverse.

Male pattern hair loss is typically influenced by genetics and hormones, and while it’s common, many men prefer to address it early rather than wait for more advanced loss. When hair follicles are still present but weakening, non-surgical treatments may help slow progression and support stronger, healthier hair.

PRP therapy offers a natural approach that works with your body’s own regenerative processes without surgery or daily medication.

The Benefits of PRP for Male Pattern Baldness

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is a non-surgical treatment that uses your body’s own growth factors to help support hair follicles affected by male pattern hair loss.

PRP is most effective when started early, before hair follicles become inactive. It is designed to strengthen existing hair and help slow further thinning when follicles are still active.

PRP works by concentrating platelets from a small blood sample and applying them to areas of thinning hair on the scalp. These platelets contain growth factors that can help improve follicle health, support the hair growth cycle, and encourage stronger hair over time.

For men experiencing early thinning at the hairline or crown, PRP offers a natural option that does not involve surgery or daily medication.

Male Hair Restoration: How PRP Stimulates Hair Growth

Male pattern hair loss often begins at the hairline or crown, where hair follicles may still be present but gradually produce thinner, weaker hair.

PRP therapy can help by:

  • Supporting weakened hair follicles before loss becomes permanent
  • Targeting thinning at the hairline and crown
  • Helping slow further hair loss when started early
  • Strengthening existing hair and improving overall density
  • Offering a non-surgical option with minimal downtime

For men who want to take action without surgery or daily medication, PRP provides a targeted, natural approach that fits into a long-term hair maintenance plan. PRP hair loss treatment for women has also been shown to be effective for women experiencing early-stage Androgenetic Alopecia.

Is PRP Right for Your Type of Hair Loss?

PRP therapy is most effective for men who are experiencing early to moderate hair thinning and still have active hair follicles.

You may be a good candidate for PRP if you:

  • Are noticing thinning at the hairline or crown
  • Have overall loss of hair density rather than complete baldness
  • Want a non-surgical option without daily medication
  • Are looking to slow hair loss and strengthen existing hair

PRP may be less effective for men with advanced hair loss where follicles are no longer present. A private consultation helps determine whether PRP is appropriate based on your hair loss pattern and goals.

I can't rave enough about the quality of service at P K Walsh. After loving the first hairpiece, and getting loads of compliments, I decided to order another to have as a backup. What came in was not exactly the same, it was shorter, straighter, smaller, etc. So I came back to discuss this with Nicky, and without hesitation she ordered me another one! No fuss, no extra charges, nothing but excellent service. The replacement is perfect. If you are looking for a wig, just make an appointment with Nicky and you will be happy!

PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) therapy is a non-surgical hair restoration treatment that uses concentrated growth factors from your own blood to stimulate weakened hair follicles. A small blood sample is drawn, processed to concentrate the platelets, and then injected into targeted areas of the scalp, typically the hairline and crown, where thinning is occurring. The growth factors in PRP help improve follicle health, extend the active hair growth cycle, and support stronger, thicker hair over time. The entire procedure takes approximately 60-90 minutes and requires no surgery, no general anesthesia, and no extended recovery period.
PRP therapy has shown positive results for men experiencing early to moderate male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia), particularly when treatment begins before hair follicles become inactive. Clinical studies support PRP’s ability to increase hair density, reduce shedding, and improve hair shaft thickness in men with active follicles. PRP is most effective for men who are noticing thinning at the hairline or crown but still have measurable hair density in those areas. Men with advanced hair loss where follicles are no longer active are generally not good candidates. A private consultation at our Norwood studio helps determine whether PRP is the right approach for your stage of hair loss.

While the PRP procedure itself is the same, male and female hair loss patterns differ significantly, and those differences shape how treatment is planned and where PRP is applied. Men typically experience hair loss in defined patterns: recession at the temples and hairline, thinning at the crown, or both. Women more commonly experience diffuse thinning across the entire scalp, which is why our PRP hair loss treatment for women follows a different protocol than our men’s treatment approach.” At PK Walsh, PRP injection patterns for men are mapped specifically to male pattern loss zones, and treatment plans are calibrated to the typical progression of androgenetic alopecia in men. Hormone-related differences also influence how follicles respond to growth factors, which is factored into our clinical approach.

Most men complete an initial series of 3-4 PRP treatments, spaced 4-6 weeks apart, to achieve optimal results. After the initial series, maintenance treatments every 6-12 months are typically recommended to sustain and build on those results. Your specific treatment plan will be customized during your consultation based on your hair loss pattern, how far it has progressed, and how your scalp responds to the initial treatments. Some men see meaningful improvement after the initial series and require only annual maintenance; others with more progressive loss may benefit from a modified schedule.
Most men begin to notice reduced hair shedding within 4-6 weeks of their first treatment. Visible improvements in hair thickness and density typically become apparent after the second or third treatment, generally around 3-4 months from starting. Optimal results are usually achieved 6-9 months after beginning the treatment series, as hair growth cycles require time to respond fully to the therapy. We document progress with standardized photos at each visit so you can objectively track improvements over time.
At PK Walsh, a comprehensive PRP starter package which includes 3 PRP treatments, 3 laser treatments, and three months of specialized scalp products is priced at $2,950, with a $200 discount available for first-time clients bringing the package to $2,750. Individual maintenance sessions and customized treatment plans are also available and will be discussed during your private consultation. We offer flexible payment options to make treatment accessible. PRP hair loss treatment for men in the Boston area is not typically covered by insurance, as it is considered a cosmetic procedure, though exceptions may apply if hair loss is related to a documented medical condition.
Most men report minimal discomfort during PRP hair treatment. At PK Walsh, we apply a topical numbing cream prior to treatment and use cooling techniques throughout the procedure to maximize your comfort. The sensation during injection is typically described as mild pressure or slight pinching. Any mild tenderness or sensitivity at the treatment sites generally resolves within 24-48 hours. The procedure is well-tolerated and most men return to normal activities, including work, the same day.
PRP therapy is non-surgical and involves little to no downtime. Most men return to normal daily activities immediately after their session. You may notice mild redness or sensitivity at the injection sites for 24-48 hours, and we recommend avoiding intense physical activity, direct sun exposure, and hair products on the day of treatment. Detailed aftercare instructions are provided after each session to help maximize your results.
